Chile – between the mountains and the sea, the poets and musicians sing of the land and the heart. This month’s mix features poets Vicente Huidobro, Pablo Neruda, and Nicanor Parra, plus a focus on the expressionistic poetics of Cecilia Vicuña, Como Asesinar a Felipes, and Kali Mutsa, and the delicate, fierce, Violeta Parra. Also some favourite folktronic producers including Lata / MMNI, Matanza, and Australia’s Galambo.

The album Elipse from Como Asesinar a Felipes is totally intriguing and multi-layered. I definitely recommend you listen to the album in full, excerpts in mixes like this hopefully inspire you to go and do so. It's on iTunes – click the album cover at the top of this page, or below to go to CAF's website, where you'll find some very compelling evidence ...

If you are looking for a deep introduction to Violeta Parra, the way I really delved into her work came about through the film Violeta se fue a los cielos (Violeta went to heaven) Directed by Chile's Andrés Wood and loosely based on Ángel Parra's memoirs of his mother. One of the most beautiful and complex films I've seen in a long time. And it definitely was the catalyst for me to immerse myself in her beautiful and complex voice, as her brother puts it in his poem,

Poesía
………. pintura
…………………. agricultura

Viola chilensis.

¡Porque tú los aclaras en el acto!
