Denice Frohman 'Feels Like Home'
Denice Frohman is an award-winning poet, lyricist, and educator, whose multicultural upbringing inspires her to explore the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and the “in-betweeness” that exists in us all. 2013 was a big year for Denice, with major wins, collaborations, and a new album. She won the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam, which makes her the #1 female ranked spoken word poet in the world. Her winning poem Dear Straight People went viral, and for good reason. Here’s that video:
Also last year, Denice got together with Dominique Christina for a tour as Sister Outsider, the first time two Women of the World Poetry Slam Champions have paired up.
And, she released a great spoken world album.
Denice writes and speaks about the borders that divide us, whether real or actual, giving voice to those on the fringes of society who are silenced. Her debut album Feels Like Home, released late in 2013, is a solid collection of passionate spoken word poetry, song and particularly a gorgeous piece Abuela’s Dance which I’ve featured in some chill sets for radio here in Melbourne over the new year, and in the 6th edition of La Danza Poetica.
You can listen to some track previews from Denice’s Soundcloud page (below) and buy the album on digital or CD-copy from her website: http://denicefrohman.com
A video recording of Denice performing the passionate love poem Abuela, live at The Pigeon Presents: The Philadelphia Poetry Slam in 2012 (a very different rendering to that on the album, but I love this raw live delivery. I also love the close-mic’d audience responses. The most beautiful thing about slam is the performer/audience collaboration!):
