Text: excerpts from Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose), by Guillaume de Lorris
Narrator: Thomas Keily

The Night Garden grows out of a powerful dream vision inspired by the influential medieval poem Roman de la Rose (The Romance of the Rose), by Guillaume de Lorris.

Written by de Lorris around 1230, Roman de la Rose's purpose is 'to both entertain and teach others about the Art of Love'. It's a curious, rich poem open to many interpretations. I adapted the essence of Lorris' original story, discarding the more moralistic (and enormous) coda to the poem by Jean de Meun.

In Lorris' story, the dreamer enters a walled garden and discovers the Fountain of Narcissus, in which he sees a beautiful rose. While looking at it, he is struck by numerous arrows by the God of Love causing him to fall in love with the rose. Gardens are places of rest, artistry and magic. Dreams are destinations where the commonplace becomes extraordinary. Tempting the dreamer and the lover in us all, The Night Garden is both an escape and a tender trap.

Visual adaptation, direction, design, animation and motion graphics by Nik Azidis and Rose Staff. Text adaptation and spatial sound / music composition by Lisa Greenaway. The voice of the dreamer is Thomas Keily.

The sound installation was designed with MAV, to create "zones" of sound, in which a different experience was felt, depending on where you stand, with the overall effect of an immersive audio environment in the large space of the forecourt.

  • Two main speaker racks left/right of the façade with the stereo mix of music and directional sounds.

  • Two left/right speakers in stereo directed sound down the centre of the forecourt stairs, filling in some sound for the main stereo mix and adding additional water, birdsong and atmospheric sounds, plus the voice of the narrator.

  • The lawn areas to the left and right of the stairs were covered with three speakers each, each lawn with a different mix of birdsong, atmospheric sound, and the voice of the narrator.

This video, compiled from the experience of the night, uses a stereo audio mix with all of the sound zones combined.
In reality, roving audiences were completely surrounded by the garden’s different sonic atmospheres.

Film version

The Night Garden was adapted as an animated film, selected for the 6th International Video Poetry Festival held in Embros Theatre in Athens, January 2018, hosted by the Institute for Experimental Arts.

Extended version

An extended stereo track featuring more of the poem was broadcast on Datscha Radio "a garden in the air", Berlin, August 2017.
