Consciousness
Audiovisual meditations on sound and suggestion.
A series of short spatial audio and abstract film compositions, binaural headphone experiences, exploring consciousness (direction: inwards).
These films are mixed for binaural audio, which approximates an omnidirectional sound field.
Binaural spatial sound only works in headphones – any will do, but over-ear headphones are best.
Across cultures and centuries, thinkers and mystics have traced the arc of human awareness from the tangible to the transcendent, from waking perception to states beyond ordinary thought. Ancient Vedantic texts speak of Jnana Bhumikas, seven grounds of wisdom. Modern contemplative traditions map levels of consciousness from waking to unity. The mysteries are never fully explained, but many different languages and cultures and traditions intuit that consciousness unfolds in stages, each a threshold toward deeper understanding.
This series slowly and methodically seeks to go on that journey as a deepening, developing listening and spatial composition exercise, guided in part by the voice of David Lynch, whose explanations of Transcendental Meditation inspired this work. The seven works · Surface · Reverie · Sleep · Gnosis · Lucence · Spirit · Accord · will trace a progression from the outermost layer of experience to the harmony of integration. Along the way, the purpose is a state of stillness and contemplation.
This work is intended as an immersive listening experience for headphones.
1 // Surface
The tangible skin of reality, where perception clings to form and texture.
2 // Reverie
Inward, into imagination, where logic loses its grip and the mind wanders freely.
3 // Sleep
Surrender to the rhythms of the body, folding inwards.
4 // Gnosis
Intuitive knowing, beyond ordinary thought, where truth is felt.
